Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in New York with strong influences from Latin America – particularly Puerto Rico, Cuba and Colombia. The movements of Salsa have its origins in Cha-Cha-Cha, Mambo and other dance forms. The dance, along with Salsa music is energetic and sexy. Quite likely Salsa is the most popular Latin dance in night clubs around the world today.

Authentic Merengue is one of the simplest Latin dances to learn and is considered the national dance of the Dominican Republic. The beat is clear, the rhythm constant, and the style is relaxed and unrushed, with a regular step-action where turns and moves can be as simple or as complex as desired, and can be executed with as many steps as the partners choose.

Bachata is also a dance from the Dominican Republic and both the music and the dance have been influenced by many of the other Latin dances including Salsa and Merengue. Bachata is typically a slower dance than Salsa and its sensual, smooth style is rapidly increasing in popularity in dance clubs world-wide. It’s also a great dance to catch your breath after a fast Salsa and it’s very enjoyable to learn with it’s simple traveling side-step.

In this class you’ll learn how to dance in sync with a partner, how to lead/follow, the basic footwork, timing and styling of Salsa, Bachata and Merengue; as well as a variety of popular moves and sequences. Lindy Hop is an American dance that evolved in Harlem, New York City, from the late 1920s through to the early 1940’s, first with the jazz music of that time and later with the Big Band swing music. The dance was resurrected in the 1980’s and has been growing in popularity ever since. It is arguably bigger now than it was in its heyday.

Lindy Hop is a social dance, and is sometimes referred to as a street dance because it is so improvisational. Lindy consists of both 8 and 6 count steps which evolved from earlier dances such as the Charleston, Tap and the Black Bottom. It was danced initially by African-American people in Harlem who gave Lindy its signature grounded, low, relaxed and loose style.

This dance incorporates a wide variety of fun partner moves, as well as break-away moves, that can be wild and spontaneous with energetic kicks and body movements, or it can be smooth, cool and sophisticated suiting a wide range of musical tempo’s. The posture, partner connection, and musical connection sets this dance apart and is as much fun to watch as it is to dance.

In this class, you will learn how to dance in sync with a partner, how to lead/follow, the basic footwork, timing and styling of Lindy Hop as well as a variety of popular moves and sequences.

You don’t need any dance experience or a partner to take part in this beginners’ course which will teach you the fundamentals you will need to enjoy this popular dance.
